As was reported by a number of sources last week, the State of North Carolina will be embarking on an ambitious anti-fraud program in connection with its Medicaid program. The program will be aided by software from IBM. Although IBM won’t charge the State for the initial software package, it will receive 10% of the money recovered from patient and physician abuses. The annual payment to IBM will be capped at $5.4 million per year.
Like many states, North Carolina is looking for new ways to reduce the costs of its healthcare programs by reducing fraud, abuse and waste in the system. Especially with respect to Medicaid, many states are facing severe budget shortfalls that will likely result in reduced services.
